threats to the dunes

development

Sited in the middle of the endangered area (the only remaining coastal sand dunes in the Fylde) is the Blackburn Children's Home. The Home is now derelict having last been occupied in 1976.

This threatened part of the coast is designated Green Belt/SSSI/Ramsar, and is a "High risk" flood zone.

The only other building in the area is the Thursby Home on the coast road.

Despite a long campaign over two years and constant pressure from Defend the Dunes supported by Lytham St Annes Civic Society, the proposed redevelopment of the BCH into 18 apartments with carports was approved by FBC in May 2003 with certain provisos for monitoring and improving the dunes in the area.

It is our commitment as a group to ensure that plans are assiduously adhered to by the developer, and the adjacent SSSI protected.

do you want this?

We wanted the Home to be demolished and the dunes system re-established.
