The dunes to the north of St Annes pier are the only form of defence against sea flooding along this particular stretch of coast. History tells us that every fifty years or so the sea breaks through the dunes causing local flooding.
The Environment Agency's Flood Plain maps
show that the area is liable to flooding.
In response to an assessment submitted to Fylde Borough Council by the developer in the recent planning application we produced our own Flood Risk Assessment.
Information now available from the Proudman Oceanograpghic Laboratory (Click here to view) has allowed us to revise our estimates of flood risk along the St. Annes shore. (Click here to view) Our estimates are in good agreement with the Proudman data and suggest that the Environment Agency seriously underestimate the risk of high sea levels and their frequency in the area of the Blackburn Home.
